Akaka Supports Compromise Debt Ceiling Bill

Statement

Date: Aug. 2, 2011
Location: Washington DC

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka issued the following statement today:

"I am supporting this compromise with deep reservations. We must avoid placing the nation's credit and our fragile economic recovery at risk. We must prevent disruptions to Social Security, Medicare, and other critically important safety net programs people in Hawaii and across the nation depend upon.

"Throughout the debt ceiling debate, I have urged good faith negotiation and compromise because a default would have been extremely damaging to the economy, financial markets, and our local families.

"Compromise by definition means that not everything we want is in there. We now need to work to ensure the agreement does not harm programs Hawaii depends on.

"Now that we are putting the debt ceiling fight to rest through next year, I hope we can get back to the urgent business of getting Americans back to work and strengthening our economic recovery."
